Senior System Engineer (m/f/d)

Munich, Remote
Full-time
Permanent employee

Your mission

Your Mission: Pragmatism meets strategic foresight
In the first few months, real "system archaeology" awaits you: You will dive deep into our historically grown, Linux-based on-prem infrastructure, fully comprehend existing Ubuntu server structures – even where documentation has been sparse so far – and ensure reliable stability.

But you won't just be cleaning up. Your goal is to build the foundation for the future: With strategic foresight, you act pragmatically in day-to-day operations while always keeping standardization and the long-term architecture in mind. Following the DRY principle (Don't Repeat Yourself), you ensure that recurring problems are solved once and automated permanently.
  • Infrastructure Ownership: You take technical responsibility for the reliability and operational readiness of our Linux infrastructure (focusing on Ubuntu). At our core is a Proxmox cluster where the central development and testing environments of our product teams run.
  • Sustainable Standardization: You transition grown structures into clearly documented, traceable processes. Your goal is Continuous Compliance, where guidelines and quality standards are seamlessly lived in day-to-day operations – without the need for regular "spring cleaning" campaigns.
  • Collaboration & Technical Writing: You possess strong communication skills. You know how to explain complex technical topics clearly to various stakeholders. You write excellent documentation and lead by example in living clean processes daily to convince the team without hierarchical authority.
  • Integrative Working: You bring a high level of cooperation and manage to involve less experienced team members productively and with motivation in new infrastructure projects.
  • Confident Balance: Boundaries in our team are fluid. You safely navigate between strategic data center infrastructure projects and daily operations (including occasional 3rd-level support for our client IT colleagues).

Your profile

You are an experienced Linux System Administrator or Systems Engineer who feels at home in both traditional and modern data center environments and understands complex operating system structures down to the smallest detail.
  • Experience in the Linux Environment: You bring several years of sound professional experience in the administration of Linux infrastructures (focusing on Ubuntu, shell scripting, package management).
  • Automation & CI/CD Hosting: You consistently work according to the "Infrastructure as Code" principle. Tools like Ansible, Terraform, and GitLab CI/CD are part of your standard repertoire. You know what it means to run the underlying server infrastructure for developer tools (e.g., Jenkins, Gerrit, Aptly) in a stable, scalable, and high-performance manner.
  • Deep Tech (On-Premises & Virtualization): You have mastered virtualization (Proxmox VE or Qemu/KVM) and Linux web/DB stacks (Nginx/Apache, PostgreSQL, Redis) inside out. In the storage domain, you are highly familiar with Ceph clusters, ZFS (TrueNAS), and backup strategies (Proxmox Backup Server, Veeam). You are also well-versed in network infrastructures, firewalls (pfSense/OPNsense), and DNS security (SPF/DKIM/DMARC).
  • The Best of Both Worlds (Scale-up Mindset): Checkmk is a scale-up – we operate right between the extremes. Therefore, we are looking for someone who combines the iterative, solution-oriented approach of the startup world with the process discipline and reliability of a larger company. You know exactly when pragmatic solutions take priority and when stable standards must be strictly adhered to.
  • Concept-First Mindset: You understand the fundamental concepts behind IT solutions. If you don't know a specific tool, you abstract the problem and quickly find the technologically cleanest solution.
  • Working Style: You combine strong project management basics with high process discipline and a strong team spirit. You communicate transparently, enjoy working collaboratively, and speak fluent English (German is a plus).
What brings you extra points (Nice to Have)
  • Knowledge of Checkmk (we use our own product for internal IT monitoring) or the Elastic Stack.
  • Experience with Debian distributions in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience with Identity & Access Management (OpenLDAP, SAML/SSO integrations, Authentik, Okta, or similar) as well as Vulnerability Management (e.g., Rapid7).
  • Experience with container technologies (Docker, OCI) or IPAM tools (NetBox).
  • Basic administration knowledge in public cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure).
